A wonderful comedy creation, Back in 1953, Frank Muir and Denis Norden, wireless humour writers, devised the Glums as an antidote to the nicey-nice BBC radio comedies. Designed to run as a short weekly sketch within their show Take It From Here, Muir and Norden's Glums portrayed a much more true-to-life crowd. First there was Pa Glum, a cantankerous old soak. Then there was his ultra-thick son Ron, gormless. Completing the trio was Ron's fiance Eth, a dowdy damsel whose horizons were set slightly higher than those of her 'beloved' but who clung to Ron because he represented her only chance of becoming a wife. Pa Glum was still married but Mrs Glum was never heard, except via off-set bumps and muffled shouts. Everyone knew their names, discussed their goings-on : Jimmy Edwards, Dick Bentley and June Whitfield. The characters were laid to rest in March 1960.
