Radio Programs |

A wonderful comedy
creation, Back in 1953, Frank Muir and Denis Norden, wireless humour
writers, devised the Glums as an antidote to the nicey-nice BBC radio
comedies. Designed to run as a short weekly sketch within their show Take
It From Here, Muir and Norden's Glums portrayed a much more true-to-life
crowd. First there was Pa Glum, a cantankerous old soak. Then there was
his ultra-thick son Ron, gormless. Completing the trio was Ron's fiance
Eth, a dowdy damsel whose horizons were set slightly higher than those of
her 'beloved' but who clung to Ron because he represented her only chance
of becoming a wife. Pa Glum was still married but Mrs Glum was never
heard, except via off-set bumps and muffled shouts. Everyone knew their
names, discussed their goings-on : Jimmy Edwards, Dick Bentley and June
Whitfield. The characters were laid to rest in March 1960. DAD'S ARMY Vol 1 - 71 Episodes Great Old time favourite radio series on CD. The best of British Comedy sitcom. Good writing and a wonderful cast of old timers and newer talents combined to produce a whimsical period-piece that has earned it's place in the 'hall of greats', enjoyed by the old and new generations of the British public. Walmington-on-Sea, an imaginary south-coast town not far from Eastbourne, was the setting for the Second World War adventures of a disparate group of men who, prevented by age or some other disability from enlisting in the services, enrolled as Local Defence Volunteers (LDV), forming part of Britain's 'last line of defence', a force which became known colloquially as 'Dad's Army'. The show became popular with a host of memorable characters, each with a recognisably different trait: the Captain, Mainwaring, was pompous and suffered from delusions of grandeur that regularly led to his downfall; his Sergeant, Wilson, was vague and - to the perpetual annoyance of Mainwaring - cultured and public-school educated; Jones was dotty; Pike was precious; Walker was wily; Frazer was pessimistic; and Godfrey was frail. Often in opposition to them were the effete vicar, the oleaginous verger, the bullish ARP warden and the officious Colonel, Mainwaring's rival from a nearby town. All of the men had day jobs: Mainwaring was the local bank manager, Wilson his chief clerk and Pike the clerk; Jones was the local butcher; Frazer was the undertaker. The comedy arose from the bickering interplay between all these characters and the sometimes desperate attempts to solve the unlikely problems encountered by the accident-prone but determined and well-meaning platoon. The popular Catchphrases from the show clicked with viewers, notably Mainwaring's 'Stupid boy', aimed, with a withering look, at Pike; Wilson's effete dispensing of military orders, such as 'Would you mind awfully falling into three lovely lines'; Frazer's exaggeratedly Scots-accented 'We're doomed'; Hodges' heartfelt, 'Ruddy hooligans!'; Godfrey's 'Would you mind if I was excused' as his ageing bladder necessitated yet another trip to the loo; and Jones's four gems, 'They don't like it up them', 'Handy-hock!', Permission to speak, sir!', and the perversely alarming 'Don't panic!'. |
The Clitheroe
Kid was James Robertson Clitheroe. Jimmy Clitheroe to most, who by some
strange coincidence did come from the town of that name without having to
change his family name! At his full height he was 4ft 3in, played the
naughty schoolboy from 1958 to 1972, at the peak of his fame the radio
show was raking in about 10 million listeners , making this series one of
the longer running on the radio. Hancock's Half-Hour - Volume 001 More than 45 Episodes - 24 hours. His famous radio show, his dextrous radio voice. Selection to include
: Tony Hancock was at
the height during the late 1950s, His character - Anthony Aloysius St John
Hancock - was invariably a loser, whose aspirations and plans were dashed
by fate, circumstance, Hancock suffered the slings and arrows of
outrageous fortune ruefully, occasionally lamenting his lot with the
heartfelt phrase 'Stone me, what a life'. 87 Wonderful episodes of Old Time Radio Comedy Programs to enjoy - over 40 hours listening - Al Reed, Beyond Our Ken, Dad's Army, Goon Show, Les Dawson, Steptoe & Son, The Navy Lark and Tony Hancock - many hours of nostalgic yesteryear listening. 72 episodes of Great Old Time Radio Comedy Programs to enjoy - Hours of listening & Laughs - I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again - It Sticks Out Half A Mile - Much Binding In The Marsh - Ray's A Laugh - Round The Horn - Take It From Here(The Glums), many hours of nostalgic yesteryear Comedy. 62 episodes of Great Old Time Radio Comedy Programs to enjoy - Hours of listening & Laughs - Bentine - Beyond The Fringe - Doctor At Large - Educating Archie and Yes Minister, Relive the innocence and humour of nostalgic yesteryear 56 Great Old Time Radio Comedy Programs to enjoy - Hours of listening & Laughs - All Gas and Gaitors - Doctor In The House - Frankie Howerd - It's Higgins Sir - Life Of Bliss - Men From The Ministry.
